| After my MX5 post, I'd realised that the MX is going to have to wait. Now I'm still in the complete dark about what to get for a first car. I'm not keen on anything over a 1.4 litre and yes the age of it does matter !
Would just like to thank everyone who posted the first time ! It's great to have some first hand advice from respectable drivers !

| You can swap any engine into any car providing you have the money, Time and tools.... as for swapping a 1.4 motor into a MX5, There's not really much you can do, Either way it's still going to be in a high insurance bracket due to the fact that it's classed as a sports car, and add to the fact you'll probably spend more on tyres than petrol if you're anything like me... | |

| Haha very true. I found that many of the VW's were ridiculously pricey. I always have the good old Mini as number 1 on my wish list. I've seen a drivetrain swap and you basically have to reshape the whole car, It's aweful. Thanks for the heads up though man | |

| Swapping to a smaller engine probably won't help as it will carry a moddified premium on the car Unfortunately the only option really is to buy something crap and in a low insurance group or bend over and pay a rediculous premium for a mildly 'warm' car
You might be better off looking at kit cars or landrovers as both have low insurance if you look in the right places and will actually make you smile, unlike most low grouped fwd shitboxes

| i have never heard of anyone bothering to downgrade an mx5. the 1.6 is rated around 110hp. of course in the US our insurance is not based on engine displacement at all.
if you gotta have a car and need something with less power since youre a new driver, just buy some hoopty to get you by for a few years, get the mx5 later.
did they sell kei cars in england? Suzuki Cappucino, Honda Beat, Mazda AZ1.....

| They're right, there is no way you can get an MX5 as a first car, unless your parents pay for it.. Get a shit box just to nip around in for a few years. Or a van, that's what I'm looking into haha. | |

| Only good thing you can do with a 1.5 Civic to it is get yourself a D16 head mounted to a hi-comp d15 block, uprated intake manifold and a 4-1 stainless exhaust manifold with a straight through de-cat exhaust with a buddy club spec 2 back box, | |

| asthmatic engines and they weigh twice what they should (volvo engineered ) but weld the diff and get out in the rain, job done! if you can find one (getting pretty rare now) they are a good budget drifter if you like to work for your slide thanks to 75 to 116bhp and bigger engine swaps are out of the realms of reality for a new driver considering the cost of insurance anyway!
