Haha, fair play, Mosuke. Consider me put in my place.
I don't believe a person should go big or go home build-wise on a car, I more believe you should do it right if at all. I'm mainly talking about these big-money builds, where a person does a full cage and has a fully-built motor inside and out and blah blah blah overfenders and high-end coilovers and then they choose cast wheels. I've worked in my fair share of shops over the years, and I always tell people the same thing - buy quality, buy once. You can't just look at the price tag when buying parts. You need to think about labor costs.
It's totally different, I feel, if you're just a young kid with a tight budget and you're building your first car for occasional track use. You're probably going to bash the car to bits, so the "cheaping out" is understandable. You don't need a titanium HKS exhaust for a stock KA24 240 - neither do you have to have high-end forged wheels. I'd just rather spend a little more on parts and not have to be so worried about ending my day early because I shattered a wheel or blew a cheap turbo gasket or broke a cheap coil. Most drift cars are based on older models, so parts - even OEM ones - are going to break, but I'd prefer to do my best to minimize the chances of me having to call it an early day.
I don't judge people on their purchases - so if you run Rotas on your car, I don't judge your whole build based on that, or look at you as a cheapskate. I get that the more of something there is, the more you're going to see it fail. You've got me there.
I think it mainly came from seeing the wheels fail so often before I found out people hated on them so heavily. I'd go to these events at Lebanon Raceway back in NY, and it seemed like at least once per day, someone would shatter a wheel. More often than not, when I asked why the hell they broke so often, my buddies would tell me "probably cheap cast Rotas". Then when I discovered DriftWorks, I found the division of people for and against Rotas, and after seeing a bunch break with my own eyes beforehand, I took the stance of against.
And I know most OE wheels are cast, haha. But if you look at the design of a stock S13 wheel, it's a solid chunk of cast material, as opposed to a spindly RG-II look-alike Rota. I prefer steelies, myself. That said, I've had a steel wheel split in half at the center on me. Turns out it was spot-welded in four places and just came apart. Thankfully I was only turning into a parking lot at low speed.
I'm still not gonna run Rotas for reals or for Forza, but you've definitely helped me understand why they aren't as bad as I imagined. The bottom line is that I've never built a track car of my own, so I'm talking out my ass, haha.
Jerk.

Hmm? Nah, haha. I just think that's generally a good-looking size for the car's shape, and a good color choice to go with the paint it has.

i love the last word addie and i agree 100% buy the best you can afford, but some of us 30 somethings cant afford advans/volks (my preffered choices) i would by a secondhand stainless exhaust a thousand times over before considering a new mild steel setup as whats the point of a part with a life of 18months?
oh and banded steel wheels are win..... but they're a damn sight more dangerous then any cheap alloy, strangely hasnt stopped me pricing up a set for my work van.
as for not judging on other peoples choices.... i dont...... unless they buy tsw venoms or any non jdm 3 spokes or fit a big assed wing on the back of a fwd haha
and i do love rota grids and drift wheels but as a brand *meh* (universal sound for not bothered either way) i was more playing devils advocate
and seriously magnesium is epic in a fire imagine brake heat, a tire failure, then sparks from the rim

I know what you mean. I can't afford the car itself at the moment, and I'm sure when I start building it up I won't be able to factor in high-end wheels if I wanna go drifting right away. I think it was Mitto on DW who said, "The best thing you can buy for your drift car is seat time."
I guess I just get so stuck-up over wheels because they seem like such an important component. They connect your car to the road, and if they're compromised, you're in some serious trouble. Spindly cast wheels honestly scare the shite out of me, haha.
